Have you ever asked yourself "What can I do to Improve my Memory", but later forgot to act upon the thought?

Many people believe they just have a bad memory period, and there's little or nothing they can do to improve their ability to recall past events, simple tasks, numbers, names, dates or other basic information that they really want to remember. This couldn't be further from the truth. There are many ways to improve memory and methods to help you compensate when your ability to remember is less than expected (or use to be). You should also know that a sudden loss of memory, especially among the elderly, might indicate conditions like Alzheimers and you should see a doctor, since there are medications which may slow down the condition's onset.

The next time you ask yourself "What can I do to improve my memory?", first ask yourself

"Are the 3 most important requirements for an improved memory part of my lifestyle: adequate sleep, exercise, and a good diet?"

These 3 things are your best friends when it comes to improving your memory. There are many, many products on the market that claim to be able to improve your memory and although some work well, many others are not worth your hard earned money. Bottom line..Any product or strategy you employ will be less effective without adequate sleep, exercise and a good diet.

If you have ever pulled an all-nighter you realize how quickly your ability to remember fades. In fact a recent study on students preparing for tests suggested that students who regularly pull "all-nighters" prior to taking an exam generally have lower grade point averages than people who get adequate sleep before taking tests. Adequate is different for each individual, but usually means at least eight hours of sleep a night. Some people may require as nuch as nine or ten hours a night. Studies have also shown that your general health declines without adequate sleep. This was especially noticable with people working swing or night shifts at work.

Exercise especially aerobic exercise will improve memory by providing more oxygen to your brain. Consider oxygen the food your brain needs to perform at it best and the more it has the better it will perform. Daily exercise also provides to benefit of overall well-being.

Studies have shown that only three months of exercise was all it took for people with low levels of aerobic fitness to increase blood flow to that part of their brain and improve their scores on memory tests.

A good diet consists of eating foods high in antioxidents, getting plenty of dietary fiber, healthy sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, and making sure blood sugar remains stable. To help kids at school, skip the cold cereal or pop tarts, cut out the junk food (empty calories) and consider serving protein instead. Eggs and toast for instance may improve not only memory, but also their ability to concentrate in class.  Yogurt shakes made with soy protein powder can also give kids and adults that extra boost to keep their minds working at peak capacity.

Once you have made the 3 basics a part of you lifestyle there are other things that you can do to improve your memory. It can help to minimize distraction while working on tasks or studying. Low music to drown out background noise can be a help: think classical or easy listening and not hard rock or heavy metal. Reducing stress levels is very important. When you are stressed out, you will not remember as much or as well. Many suggest meditation to both focus the mind and to reduce overall stress; prayer may work equally well.

When you are attempting to memorize things like phone numbers, dates, names, math formulas and the like these can be very difficult for many people. The best methods include attaching meaning to them. Spend some time working on attaching meaning to the number in whatever ways works best for you, and repeat the number verbally and write it down plenty of times to help you remember it.

Also keep in mind the old adage "use it or loose it". The more you exercise your brain the sharper it will become. Challenge yourself by trying to memorize information that you would find useful or just plain fun to know. Keep a journal of what goes on during each day and read it back often. Your memory will continue to improve and your mental skills will only increase.
